not my most yogic moment 🥴

Let’s talk about the A-word

No, not THAT A-word.

You might not know this about me, but I can spark like a toaster with a fork in it if something rubs me the wrong way. I know, I know. It’s not good, and I’m working on it. We’re all working on something, right?

So, if you remember, my friend Camilla and I are going on this hike in the mountains where I’ll have to carry a 40-pound backpack up and down for miles every day. And I am not naturally strong. I’m pretty fine-boned, with small muscles, and not that many of them, it feels like. So I need to practice.

The other day, I loaded up my backpack, grabbed my hiking poles, and went out walking. At one point, I had to walk along a road with no sidewalk and no shoulder. I was walking on the left side, facing traffic, and when I saw a car coming, I waved one of my poles a little. Just a friendly, “Hey, I’m here. Please don’t run me over.”

But the car didn’t slow down or move over. It just kept coming closer and closer, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that if I hadn’t thrown myself out of the way, the car would have hit me.

And something in me just fired. As the car passed, I turned around, waving my poles in the air, and yelled, “YOU [BEEP BEEP]… ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL ME?!”

Not so very calm. Not so very yogic. I’m not perfect all the time. ;-)

Then the car stopped and started backing up toward me. And suddenly I’m thinking, OMG. I just screamed at a crazy person!

But no. It was a little old lady, and she was mortified. She told me she’d been changing the radio station and hadn’t seen me. She was genuinely very sorry. And there I stood, backpack on, hiking poles in hand, adrenaline pumping, after having just screamed at this poor woman like a lunatic.

Which brings me to my point: anger.

It can feel incredibly justified in that first fiery second, but sometimes the story we tell ourselves is, “They did that to ME.” When the reality might be much less personal. Maybe they were distracted. Maybe they misunderstood. Maybe they were changing the radio station and weren’t thinking about you at all. Which, to be fair, is a completely different problem.

Sometimes anger just piles more onto what already happened. And then, if you’re anything like me, you get angry at yourself for getting angry, which is pretty ironic.

So no grand lesson here. But maybe the next time something lights that little fire, I’ll remember the woman changing her radio station.

Maybe.
