Is metta too mushy?

Yoga Explorer | MAR 31

Never!

What is metta?

Metta meditation, also called loving-kindness meditation, is a practice of directing kind, friendly wishes toward ourselves and others.

It may sound simple, but it can be powerful

The way we speak to ourselves shapes how we move through the world. Metta helps soften that inner tone and creates more compassion, steadiness, and ease.

The word metta is most often translated as loving-kindness, but it has also been translated as universal goodwill or loving-friendliness.

How metta is practiced

Metta is often practiced in layers, gradually widening the circle of compassion.

Start by bringing your attention to your heart area.

Then offer loving-kindness to:

  1. Yourself

  2. Someone you love

  3. A neutral person

  4. A difficult person

  5. All beings

You can repeat phrases like:

  • May I be safe

  • May I be healthy

  • May I be happy

  • May I be at ease

  • May I be at peace

Then repeat the same phrases for each person or group.

Why this practice matters

Metta is not about forcing yourself to feel something fake.

It is a practice of intention.

A practice of softening.
A practice of relating differently.
A practice of remembering that kindness is strength too.

A little April 1 reminder

Take a few minutes to step outside and look up at the first full moon of spring, the Pink Moon.

It is named after the pink wildflowers that bloom this time of year and is often associated with renewal, growth, and fresh starts.
